I’m not going to start this post by talking about the project. On the contrary, I want to tell you about the lunch I had with one of my friends last week who is not working in the tech industry.
We had not seen each other for years. We were chatting, asking questions, what we’d been doing all these years, personally, professionally, and subsequently, it gets to what we’re doing now. The moment I started talking about this project, she said: “yes I guess I read about your project in your blog, Alpha? Right?”
At that moment, in my head, I was like “Oh shit, another one who doesn’t have any clue what I’m doing” So I corrected her that we haven’t revealed the name yet, and Alpha is a prefix used in the versioning of software development to refer to usually early non-properly tested version of the software app. She seemed very interested in the subject or at least was very polite, acting so. She wasn’t the first one who had this take of what I’ve been posting in the last couple of years. As a matter a fact I’ve already faced similar understandings a few more times.
In retrospect, I have to say It’s on me ( and people like me ). We sometimes forget about the established premises in our minds and assume everyone lives our world. We also use a lot of jargons, which is only meaningful to those working in the tech industry. As we are surrounded most of our time with those folks, we can easily fool ourselves by thinking nothing more appealing is going on in the world but our work and advancement, and forget about how weird we sound on the eyes of outsiders.
The Project
As I previously explained here, after finishing phase 12, we jumped into carrying out phase 19’s tasks and did about 40 percent of them. Took us about 10 days. Then we got back to our regular track and started phase alpha 13. So technically this phase took about 3 weeks. For the amount of work we’ve done, I can say I’m pretty satisfied with the time we spent on getting it done.
Boy, it was a tough one, we implemented the majority of the UI components (Android). Still, we expect the most challenging phase (and subsequently lengthier) to be Alpha 15 because of the feature we’re going to implement in that phase. Obviously, I can’t talk about it yet, and I hate it. Anyway let’s not stress out now and ruin our current victory.
At the moment, I’m physically away from my team (working remotely) so let me end this post here to celebrate completing phase 13 tonight with drinks and dessert in Skype with the rest of team.
